We love the El Rey Network here at Scary Basement Media. The network was founded by legend indie genre filmmaker, Robert Rodriguez (El Mariachi, From Dusk till’ Dawn, Desperado, Spy Kids). The cable television station is packed with old school action and horror television shows as well as freakin’ awesome movies. It also has some nice original content too including The Directors Chair, where the founder himself sits down and speaks to successful genre directors, the Dusk ’till Dawn series, and a few reality shows scattered here and there. Now Rodriguez, with the help of Octopie Animation Studios, has created something very unique with Explosion Jones.

It’s a cartoon series set in the 80s and plays like a classic action movie a la’ Commando, Big Trouble in Little China, and Rambo. This series looks like so much fun! It stars Michael Madsen (The Hateful Eight, Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill) as the title character, Carl Weathers (Rocky 1, 2, 3, & 4, Predator, Happy Gilmore) and Vivica A. Fox (Independence Day 1 & 2, Kill Bill).

“In the animated shorts series set in the 1980s, Bruce “Explosion” Jones is an ex-special forces commando turned rogue detective/single dad just trying his best. Explosion is all action, all the time. So when the Russians steal a nuclear weapon or the President’s boat has been hijacked with his daughter on board, “Explosion” is your man.” – NYCC

This looks like more fun that a John Rambo, John Matrix, and Jack Burton Battle Royale. Watch the trailer below and get The El Rey Network if you don’t have it already!
